Casa Gorgacce, Niccone Valley

Why stay at Casa Gorgacce?

Accommodating a maximum of six guests, Casa Gorgacce is a restored farmhouse in the Niccone Valley, which runs from the Tuscan village of Mercatale di Cortona (3km) into Umbria and down to the Upper Tiber Valley.

This holiday house is private – but not isolated – and is a short drive to the villages of Mercatale, Tuscany and Lisciano Niccone, Umbria, where you will find supermarkets, butchers, bakers, bars, restaurants and post offices.

The living room is on the middle floor of the holiday villa – the upper floor is unrestored, keeping the house cool in summer. External steps lead up to an open, walled terrace with outdoor dining table and an extendable sun-awning attached to the front of the farmhouse.

From the terrace, you enter the main room of the farmhouse – this is now an open plan kitchen/dining/living room. Near the entrance to this room, there is a dining table with seating for six. The kitchen has a gas hob, electric oven, washing machine, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.

An old fireplace is located in the far wall of this room, and is now fitted with an efficient wood-burning stove. The sitting area is next to the fireplace and is furnished with sofas and easy chairs; there is satellite TV and DVD player.

The main double bedroom is at the front of the house, off the main room with a high beamed ceiling. A short corridor from the back of the living room leads to the other two bedrooms – one with double bed and the other with two singles – and the bathroom with shower. There are beamed ceilings throughout the farmhouse and terracotta floors – once up the external steps, the holiday accommodation is all on one level, apart from a single step into the bathroom.

There are good views from each room, across to the Castle of Reschio on one side of the valley and of Sorbello Castle in the distance.

The private swimming pool is 9 x 4.5 metres and has comfortable sun loungers and a thermal cover. One of the best features of the garden is an open-sided barn, giving daytime shade and protection in the event of rain. It is equipped with table, benches and barbecue.

The barn is located next to the pool (accessed via a gate), and is a great place for al fresco dining on hot summer afternoons and evenings. Next to the open sided barn and pool is an outdoor table-tennis table. All that is shown in the pictures and described above is private to guests at the holiday house.

The owners have an apartment at the other side of the building on the ground floor, where they stay when in Italy. It is not available for renting and does not in any way invade the privacy of the rental house. The house manager – a good cook – can provide a meal, by arrangement, for your first evening and always leaves a welcome pack.

There are many day trips possible from this self-catering holiday villa to the surrounding historic and cultural centres of Umbria and Tuscany. Cortona is a twenty-five minute drive, and within an hour you can visit Perugia, Deruta, Assisi, Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Siena, Gubbio, Orvieto, Montepulciano and other hill towns. From the villa, Florence is around two hours by car or an hour on the fastest train.
