Luxury Villa Castellino, Umbria & Tuscany

Why stay at Villa Castellino?

Castellino is a large country house near an ancient fortress that towers over the Niccone Valley and the Tuscany-Umbria border. This beautifully restored holiday rental house traces its roots back to the 14th century. It is a private and luxurious villa – the grounds are fenced in and there are lockable metal gates at the entrance.

There are outstanding views looking over the valley to another ruined castle in Tuscany (Pierle). The Umbrian village of Lisciano Niccone and the Tuscan village of Mercatale di Cortona are nearby in the valley below – both villages are just a few minutes away by car, and have all services needed for a self-catering holiday; there are restaurants, supermarkets, butcher’s shops a bakery and bars. This holiday house is of a high quality and sympathetically restored to its old charm. It is spacious and comfortably furnished with all modern fittings including: stereo system, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, TV / DVD player and library, and netted windows.

First Floor

The main door, as was traditional in farmhouses, is from a walled loggia approached by external stairs and leads into a large living room with sofas, coffee table, TV and DVD player on the first floor. To one side of the living room are two bedrooms, each with two single beds, which share a bathroom (shower).

All three rooms are accessed via a short corridor from the living room. On the other side of the sitting room is the master bedroom (en-suite) with large double bed. The spacious en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower and stand alone tub (positioned so you can look out the window while you bathe and remain in complete privacy).

Ground Floor

On the ground floor of the villa is another spacious living room, connected by an internal staircase to the first one. French windows open from the lower living room directly onto a large, well furnished patio area with superb views of Tuscany and Umbria. This outside patio area has a shady veranda roof, which extends from the side of the house, making it ideal for al fresco dining, reading or catching up on emails on your laptop. Leading through a wide doorway from the lower living room is the large open-plan kitchen and dining room.

The kitchen is well-equipped and there is a large wooden farmhouse table for inside dining. This room also has an original 14th century working fireplace. An external door from the kitchen provides access to a shady stone-paved courtyard with more outside dining furniture. On the other side of the living room is a large double bedroom with its own sitting area and bathroom next door with a walk-in shower. This bedroom also has french doors opening up to an outdoor sitting area on the patio. Also, on the ground floor, there is a utility room with washer and dryer.

Swimming Pool & Garden

The large 14 x 5 metre swimming pool (50 feet) takes full advantage of the sloping terraces to provide breathtaking views across the treetops to the hills of the Tuscany-Umbria border and the Niccone Valley. There is a large paved surround with quality sun loungers and umbrellas to provide shade. The slope between the house and the pool has been planted with scented Mediterranean plants including lavender and rosemary. The grounds are extensive with olive groves, orchard, organic vegetable garden and traditional stone-built barbecue. There is also a tree house and plenty of space for children to play and explore.

There are many day trips possible from Castellino to the surrounding historic and cultural centres of Umbria and Tuscany. Cortona is a twenty minute drive, and within an hour you can visit Perugia, Deruta, Assisi, Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Siena, Gubbio, Orvieto, Montepulciano and other hill towns. Florence is just over an hour by car or the fastest train.
