Shooting Star Inn, Zanzibar

zanzibar shooting star inn

The Shooting Star Inn, Zanzibar is a small family run hotel set in intimate and tranquil surroundings and built in traditional Zanzibari style (with white lime washed walls, high beamed ceilings and large windows).

It overlooks the beautiful tropical east coast beach of Kiwengwa and is 40 kilometres from Zanzibar town. There is a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets to choose from. Sea view cottages are ensuite with quiet private verandas overlooking the, beach and Indian Ocean Lodge rooms are simply furnished with ensuite overlooking the tropical gardens close to the main bar and sunbathing area. Each accommodation is spacious, cool and comfortable. Other facilities include an open-air bar and restaurant serving African and International cuisine and evening BBQ’s during Full Moon where lobster and smoked fish are house specialities.

Those seeking activities may hire bikes, windsurfers, go snorkelling, fishing or horseback riding, amongst various excursions including Jonzi Forest (one of the last remaining sanctuaries of the red colobus monkey), Prison Island (a unique combination of giant tortoises and Arab ruins) and the famous Island Spice Tour.

Diving

Diving in resort can be accommodated at the nearby 5 star PADI Resort just along the beach from the resort. With many popular sites experienced scuba divers can enjoy exciting wall dives, night dives and drift dives. In deeper waters, lush coral gardens often stretch as far as the eye can see, and large pelagic gamefish (barracuda, kingfish, tuna and wahoo) hunt together with large Napoleonic wrasse, graceful manta rays and sharks. Shallower waters are the play ground of tropical fish, including a huge variety of Indo-Pacific marine fauna.

Some of Zanzibar’s best diving is to be found on the north coast. Explore the many popular dive sites including Nankivel, a large coral head, Leon’s wall – a superb wall dive with several caves and humpback whales in September and Kichwani, a nice shallow drop off with big fan coral and schools of dolphins, snappers, sweet lips and big-eyes. Diving in Zanzibar is ideal for novices and experts alike..
