Honeymoons in Mauritius are a modern classic. A part of Africa, but a part like no other. The island paradise has some of the chicest couples resorts, the highest standards of service, the most luxurious hotels.
Whether you’re in a deluxe beachfront resort, a chic hotel in the mangroves, or a boutique guest house in the forest, it’s a place to unwind and simply enjoy the company of your new wife or husband and perhaps make new friends among your fellow travellers.
Wherever you choose, the waves of the deep blue sea are never too far away so it’s hard not to feel your muscles sinking and the warmth draining all the stresses and strains of the past month out of you. Watersports are always there if you fancy stepping up a gear – diving, jet skiing or parasailing for the more adventurous.
And once you have your energy back, you can explore the interior of the island. Port Louis, the island’s capital, is a bustling meeting place of cultures. Here you will find Arab traders, French cuisine and African art. If you fancy a bit of a thrill, you can put a little cash on your favourite at the Champ de Mars race course, which is reputed to be the second oldest in the world. Or you can stop in at the quirky Blue Penny museum, which is named after a local stamp but actually covers the full history of the island.
The island’s colonial history is all around you and you can walk through it at the perfectly preserved 1830s mansion Eureka. Legend has it that the odd name comes from the reaction of a former owner, Eugène Le Clézio when he won an auction for it in 1856. You might feel the same way.
