Day Two – 9am Classical Rome Tour
Travel by both coach and on foot on this Classical Rome tour where you will see some of the major classical sites of this beautiful city without taking up your entire day.
Crossing Piazza della Repubblica with the Fountain of the Nayads, your local guide will take you on a pleasant stroll through the historical centre, where you can admire the Trevi Fountain – arguably the most famous fountain in Rome, it was designed by Nicolas Salvi in the XVIII century and is the very last example of the magnificent baroque art.
You will also see La Colonna di Marco Aurelio and the Palazzo di Montecitorio before arriving at the Pantheon. This architectural wonder of the Ancient Rome is the burial place of Raffaello and its architecture has been admired and studied by many Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo as you will discover when you explore the interior.
The tour continues to Palazzo Madama, seat of the senate, and to Piazza Navona, a traditional baroque square that was once a stadium built by Caesar Domiziano in 92 A.D and today is known as the square of artists. The Four Rivers Fountain by Bernini dominates the piazza and dates from the seventeenth century.
Your coach then takes you past Castel S. Angelo en route to Vatican City where you can admire the beautiful architecture of St. Peters Basilica and St Peters Square, explore this magnificent church on your own and to admire masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s la Pietà a and Bernini’s bronze canopy.
After the visit you can decide to stay in Vatican City and explore by yourself or get the coach back to the main central points of the city (Via Veneto, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia, Piazza della Repubblica and Termini Rail Station).
Day Three – watch England vs Italy in the 6 Nations Championship.
Day Four – 10am Colosseum Tour including Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
Experience the most important sites of Ancient Rome, skipping the long lines on this half-day tour which covers the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill – so you spend less time queuing and more time exploring!
Visit Rome’s most iconic site, the Colosseum, with an expert, English-speaking guide who will talk you through the bloody past of the amphitheater, home to gladiators, mock sea-battles and executions. We’ll spend over an hour inside the Colosseum, exploring it from two levels and wandering its circumference in an effort to understand what it must have been like when the stands were packed, the crowds were roaring and a gladiator’s life hung on the whims of an emperor.
Our tour also covers the Roman Forum, where you’ll walk along the “Via Sacra” or “Sacred Way” – the main path through the Roman Forum, which once sparkled with festivals and triumphal processions as Roman armies returned from war. Revisit the past as your guide points out the old moneylender’s shop, Caesar’s Temple and the house of the Vestal Virgins (who had undoubtedly the best job in Ancient Rome).
On top of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, we’ll see the Palatine Hill, the most famous of the Seven Hills of Rome. From here you will admire the views of the Roman Forum and Nero’s Circus Maximus where chariot races were once held. Romulus and Remus were said to have been found on the Palatine by the she-wolf who nursed and raised them. Legend holds that Romulus went on to found Rome, so your guide will mean it when they explain that this really is the heart of the Eternal City!
In Rome’s most popular tourist sites things can get pretty hectic – get the most from your visit with not just Skip the Line Access, but headsets when appropriate so you can always hear your guide. Covering the three most important sites of Ancient Rome, this half-day tour means you can see the very best of the enchanting ruins on even the shortest vacation.
Return Private taxi transfer to the airport for your flight departing Rome Fiumcino to Gatwick at 16.00 and arriving back into Gatwick at 17.35
