Fishing and Ecology Safaris - Lake Nasser
...Liveaboard Boat Safaris on Egypt’s Picturesque Desert Lake

Introduction | How the Safaris Work | Desert Lake Experience | Safari Fleet

Contemplating something new?

Here, being adventurous and quirky with your holiday plans does not go unrewarded, for an Eco-Holiday or Fishing Safari on Lake Nasser is the closest you’ll ever get to the true meaning of ‘Safari’a style of mobile camping that combines comfort with the incredible experience of being out in real wilderness.

Most anglers visiting this unique desert lake for the first time will catch the largest freshwater fish of their lives, which are then tagged and released. Practically everyone achieves this goal and has an angling adventure they will never forget.

Some of the best Freshwater Fishing in the World!
The fish populations of the original Nile River system were presented with a huge lake to live in and have thrived in their new habitat, especially the Tilapia and their predators, the massive Nile Perch, Tiger Fish and species of big catfish; all of which provide anglers with exceptional sport.

Lake Nasser
In the middle of the largest and driest desert on our planet, you’ll find Lake Nasser – a vast body of water in an otherwise harsh environment. A magical wilderness of stunning desert scenery; characterised with an eclectic landscape – hilly and rugged or flat and sandy – trimmed with clean freshwater beaches dotted with rocky islands. It is clear, that terrific angling is not the only memorable experience a Fishing Safari on Lake Nasser has to offer!

With its majesty, it’s hard to believe that the lake is completely manmade – the story goes back to the 1960’s when the High Dam was built, thus resulting in the lake flooding some 5,250sq km of the Nile Valley. It’s hard to comprehend how big Lake Nasser really is; the flying distance between London Heathrow and Cairo airport is 3,511km – the shoreline of the lake is twice that distance at 7,844km!

The West bank of the lake attracts a multitude of wild birds with its vast stretches of flat, shallow shores. The area is an important staging point for millions of over-wintering and migrating birds, which choose the site to rest up and feed on their journeys between Africa and Europe. The resulting bird population attracts a variety of predators, making up a food chain containing an impressive variety of mammals and reptiles.

In contrast, the East bank of the lake is scenically very different – made up of wild and rugged desert landscapes where the Nile has pushed up against a range of mountains on its way north to the Mediterranean Sea.

On the Lake, you will see small population of transient peasant fishermen, living in ramshackle temporary camps, fish the lake using simple wooden boats and gill nets. The usual residents are Bedouin camel and sheep herdsmen, who are seen grazing their flocks on the sparse vegetation growing on the edge of the Lake.

There are also several important Nubian archaeological sites – these were dismantled block by block and moved to higher ground when the lake was first flooded. The most notable are the temples of Abu Simbel, which were built by the Pharaoh, Ramses II, in 1200 BC. Designed as a show of strength, four immense statues of Ramses address the lake – an awe-inspiring image of sentinels watching over any boats sailing into the Pharaoh’s lands.

The weather is nearly always sunny; most areas have not had any rain for five to ten or more years. Spectacular desert sunsets are followed by a dazzling night sky full of brilliantly bright stars; in this part of the world there is absolutely no light pollution – something very few people have ever experienced!
