| MARETTIMO
Marettimo is known as the “Sacred Hiera” or the Sacred Island.
It is part of the Egadi archipelago which includes Ustica and Favignana
and is furthest from Sicily. It looks like a huge mountain immersed in
a green field. There are almost no cars, hotels, discos and no campsites.
Marettimo is very far from the madding crowd. This is great for people
looking for some peace and quiet; there are a few hundred white houses
built from indigenous Tufa, nestling close to the shoreline and the harbour.
Further inland are many trails, which allow the hiker to go through almost
all the territory of the island, exploring the flora, which is particular
to Marettimo, the small coves and the verdant coastline Those who would
like a day ‘away from it all’ can find a water taxi to take
them to a secluded cove for a relaxation a romantic picnic. Those interested
in archaeology will not be disappointed either, as there are Roman ruins,
a Spanish castle and a small temple which is dated back to the 1st century
AD.
Diving in Marettimo is proving to rank with the very best in the Mediterranean
Voglia Di Mare. Dive centre is based off the main square and their dive
boat is in the port of Scala Vecchio, 3 minutes walk away. All the dive
equipment is stored on the boat. Marcello and his team know each dive-site
intimately. The diving ranges from medium to challenging. A clear picture
of each dive is described in the “dive profile” (please ask
for one). The week always starts with an easy dive so that Marcello and
his staff can assess the new arrivals.
There is a variety of accommodation
available on Marettimo, which makes Marettimo an ideal venue for club
and group diving. We use fully furnished apartments, rooms and a small
self-catering holiday village the Marettimo Residence; 40 self catering
units: studios, one and two bedroom units and 2 bedroom suites with magnificent
balconies overlooking the sea. All the units have a terrace and balcony
with BBQ facilities in the gardens. The Residence is directly above the
sea and a five minute stroll to the village. Sea bathing is from the
rocky foreshore below. It has typical chalets in a beautiful garden setting
with tumbling bougainvillaea. Many of the chalets have views of the coastline.
There is a small swimming pool. If you don’t feel like cooking
you will find several typical local restaurants and coffee bars serving
a traditional Sicilian menu. Marettimo is also the ideal location for
a long weekend diving apart from July August.
