KALKAN Kalkan descends to the sea in terraces of whitewashed houses, its steep cobbled streets and colourful harbour sleepy under the midday heat. Once the sun sets, the pretty sea front and picturesque alleys come alive again. The little carpet bazaars, arty jewellery shops where lovely pieces are made to measure in silver and gold. The variety and quality of eating places on offer is quite astonishing for such a compact place. You can sit cross-legged on kilims or floor cushions and be served Turkish dishes the traditional way or indulge in an orgy of seafood in one of the 9-mile stretch of soft golden sand, where the evocative ruins of once-fine city protrude out of the encroaching sand dunes. In the heart of Lycia, Kalkan offers easy access to many of the great classical sites. The ancient city of Xanthos just north of Patara was once the capital of the Lycian federation.

Club Xanthos **** A stylish hotel that enjoys views of the beautiful coastline, the Club Xanthos is set on a hillside in a peaceful, isolated location. It is therefore very central to all amenities and Pirat beach, which consist of patio platforms over the sea with sun beds and umbrellas. There are three swimming pools all overlooking the beautiful sea including a very good-sized children’s pool, pool bar, buffet restaurant, a breakfast terrace overlooking marina: lobby leads to main bar with terrace. The Samira has a large swimming pool with separate children’s section, a pleasant, sunny terrace, snack bar and attractive rooftop breakfast restaurant, surrounded by colourful flowers. The town centre is only 200 m away and the seafront is 600 m away. The beach of Kalkan is adequate for swimming but it is easy also to reach the beautiful cove of Kaputas, lying between Kalkan and Kas, and the golden sandy bay of Patara, to the west of Kalkan, by dolmus or sea taxi.
