NORTHERN CYPRUS

Hotel Bellapais Gardens

The most Cypriot accommodation on the island of Cyprus, Hotel Bellapais Gardens lies beneath majestic Bellapais Abbey, in a nature park, at the edge of Lawrence Durrell's village. The views of the beautiful coastline and mountains are breathtaking and are complemented by the song of bee-eaters and the scents of jasmine, wild orchids and fruit trees. Tranquility, hospitality, local flavours, feasts and culture are the passwords at Bellapais, yet the popular resort and harbour town of Kyrenia is just five minutes drive down the hill. During the heat of the day you can cool off in the spring-fed pool or relax with a coffee under the tree of idleness, evoking Durrell's Bitter Lemons. A good base for exploring the island, and a peaceful retreat to return to at the end of the day.

Ambelia Village

1000ft above sea-level, up in the foothills of the Five Finger Mountains, Ambelia Village overlooks the 13th-century gothic abbey of Bellapais, some four miles from Kyrenia. The village is a collection of private houses and studio flats, all built in stucco, with traditional shuttered windows and wooden balconies set among the olive and cypress trees, bougainvillea and hibiscus. The villas have three bedrooms with five beds, lounge, equipped kitchen and private balcony/terrace. Studios comprise a large living area with two beds and equipped kitchen. There is a restaurant and bar for meals and snacks around the pool and picnics can be provided for days out exploring the unspoilt coastline, ancient sites and beautiful countryside. Ambelia is set on a steep hillside. Car hire is recommended.

Nostalgia Hotel

In the heart of old Kyrenia the Nostalgia Hotel offers simple accommodation with 14 pleasant rooms furnished in typical Turkish-Cypriot style, en-suite with telephone and TV. The restaurant is justly renowned for its fine wines, Cypriot-style mezes and delicious charcoal-grilled kebabs and fish. Step outside into the narrow streets of the old quarter, which dates back to Ottoman times, where you are more likely to hear the call-to-prayer from the mosque rather than the noise of traffic, and the picturesque harbour and Venetian castle are just minutes away, together with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. The staff can organise excursions, car rental, fishing and boat trips.

Santoria Village

In the foothills of the Kyrenia mountains, nestled among olive and pine trees, lies the Santoria Village. The sea is just a few minutes away, an easy walk through Kyrenia's only nature reserve, with the centre of Kyrenia only four miles away. The Santoria consists of eight one-bedroom bungalows built in traditional Cypriot style and offers quality accommodation, tastefully decorated to a high standard. The bungalows, most of which have a pool view, are all air-conditioned with a private balcony, and are fitted with mini bar, kettle, telephone and television. The development itself is spacious with a large swimming pool, jacuzzi, pool bar serving snacks and an excellent restaurant. Aside from relaxing by the pool the Santoria Village offers a wide range of facilities such as scuba diving.
