Peschino
A four bedroom house that sleeps 8, Peschino (little peach tree) sits on the lower slopes of a quiet, wooded farming valley that is part Tuscany, part Umbria.
It is approached by a kilometre of farm track through fields of tobacco, sunflowers, trees and wild flowers.
Just three kilometres away is the border with Umbria where the old customs house still stands.
It is a typical farmhouse of the area with living accommodation on the upper floor. An old, undeveloped as yet, tobacco drying tower is attached to the lower part of the house.
The ceilings have chestnut beams and exposed tiles.
The floors are of locally hand made terracotta tiles and there is a fireplace with wood stove.
The main room has comfortable furniture around the fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen and dining area.
There are four bedrooms, two double and two with two single beds.
The first double bedroom comes off the living room and has views across the valley. The second double bedroom is at the end of a short hallway from which also comes a bathroom. The third bedroom, with two single beds comes off the living room and the fourth bedroom, two single beds, is accessed through this. A bathroom also comes off the main living room.
Bed linen, bathroom and pool towels are provided.
There are two bathrooms, one with a shower, one with a tub and shower attachment. Bookings at Peschino are Sunday-Sunday.
There is a highly effective wood stove (some wood is provided free, extra is paid from the housekeeping deposit ), electric convector heaters and a portable gas heater which make the house habitable from Easter to the end of October.
The pool is over thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide with a deep area. There is a gazebo and eating area alongside the pool and another level grassy area above with superb views.
Peschino is a very scenic 35 minutes drive to Cortona on a traffic free road. Cortona has been continuously inhabited for longer than any other city in Europe. Its origins are pre Etruscan though the classic hill town is mainly medieval in architecture.
In Tuscany, Montepulciano, Arezzo, Siena and Florence are all within a day's compass. In Umbria : Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Orvieto and Spoleto are all less than an hour away. Urbino and even Rome are easy day trips.
But the near locality has much to offer in scenic beauty, atmosphere, and the many small, ancient towns that dot the hills.
The nearest shopping town is Trestina, 20 minutes away in the Tiber valley but there is a village shop, bar/cafe and post office only a couple of miles from the house. A car is, of course, essential.
