MEXICO – Don
Jose Liveaboard, Baja
From June through to November, Baja California in Mexico offers some
of the best diving in the world. The Don Jose Liveaboard offers two trips
- the Whaleshark Expedition and the Sea of Cortez Expedition. Custom
built in 1978, the Don Jose is an 80ft vessel with seven air conditioned
cabins (above deck). Marine wildlife viewing onboard is excellent as
the second and third decks of the boat are high above the water enabling
passengers to look down upon the whales, dolphins, mantas and whalesharks.
A spotter plane is also used to direct the boat to the animals as they
feed The crew always includes both naturalist and divemaster, and kayaks
are available for an additional ways to explore the water.

The Sea of Cortez – referred to by Jacques Cousteau as the ‘aquarium
of the world’ – is a unique ecosystem formed by powerful
ocean currents generating constant water renewal. This has encouraged
a huge diversity of marine life with over 800 fish species, and much
pelagic traffic. The area attracts whales and whalesharks (predominantly
May/June and August through to October), and humpback whales annually
migrate across the southern Sea of Cortez. Best dive sites include El
Bajo for its schooling hammerheads, the wreck of Salviaterra and Las
Animas for ‘the Pinnacles’. Also a visit to Los Islotes is
great for a chance to the dive with the numerous sealions.
