AUSTRALASIA - PAPUA NEW GUINEA

It is difficult to have a brief discussion about an indigenous history of New Guinea as the peoples are so varied (about 800 different languages) because of the lands enormously varied environments and geography, however following is a very brief outline: 40,000 years ago the greater Australian landmass had been colonised by Asian peoples. The amazing part about this colonisation was that it required watercraft. It was not until about 30,000 years later in the Mediterranean is there strong evidence of watercraft anywhere else. At the end of the last ice age, 10,000 years ago New Guinea was cut off from the Australian landmass by the Torres Straight, which triggered divergent development of the Australian Aborigines and New Guineans, with Australia being generally dry and arid than younger New Guinea, which is one of the wettest and most fertile places on Earth.

MV Chartan

The world's most exotic diving destination has a new attraction. She is the M.V. Chertan, a purpose-built dive boat which has begun operations out of Alotau in Milne Bay and is equipped with a full complement of crew which includes your host and divemaster Rob van der Loos.

The Chertan introduces a term many intrepid divers are unfamiliar with - luxury.

The vessel is the culmination of a dream for Rob who's had 30 years exploring the blue, clear waters of Milne Bay and beyond: it has given him a unique insight into the wonders of the area.

On board Chertan the living is easy. One of the most memorable "post diving" experiences is the food, where freshness is the key to describing the rich offerings of the region.

A cruise on Chertan offers unlimited diving for the enthusiast as well as an introduction to the local culture.

Our itineraries are all about adventure, challenge and discovery in conditions that few have experienced. From dugouts to dugongs, from plunging coral drop-offs to towering volcanic mountains, skull caves and thermal springs, from hammerhead sharks to manta rays, the region is truly unique.

M/V Star Dancer

With many different itineraries, the M/V Star Dancer offers divers the opportunity to visit many times without ever repeating sites.

From January through March and during July and August, Star Dancer embarks from Rabaul, rich in history and protected from the southeasterly tradewinds by the Gazelle Peninsular. In the early months, Star Dancer leaves Rabaul for the South Coast of New Britain Island where divers enjoy some of the best critter diving available along with an exciting up-the-river trip to a fresh water blue hole for more diving. In July and August, the diving around Rabaul offers great variety from lovely fans and whips to sharks to frog fish and much more.

The rest of the year, Star Dancer embarks from Walindi Plantation located on West New Britain Island on the east side of the Willaumez Peninsula, offering a variety of itineraries which include Kimbe Bay, Father's Reef, Lolabau Island and the Witu Islands. On certain special itineraries Star Dancer also visits Kavieng on the northern tip of New Ireland.

Kri Eco Resort

Sitting on the edge of mountainous Kri Island the dive resort is shaded by palm trees that run along a long fine white sand beach.

Wild birds awaken our guests each morning at sunrise so they will be on time for breakfast and the morning dive. We see Eclectis Parrots, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Hornbills, Great Billed Parrots, Brush Turkeys, Lorikeets, Kingfishers and others during the day.

A jetty built over the large shallow lagoon in front of the eco-resort also leads to five of the guest houses. As a bonus, since accommodations are over the water, we often see sharks, rays and schools of fish in our "garden".

The compressor, storage, toilets, baths and staff quarters are located on the island, but in distance to the resort. Our dining and kitchen house is alongside the beach over the water! You can almost cool your toes while having dinner at high tide.

TRANS NIUGINI TOURS

From the mighty Sepik River, to the remote Tari Vally, from the magnificent Rondon Ridge, to the flood plains of Bensbach Wildlife Lodge, from the picturesque North Coast to the incredible art of the Karawari. In this land of nearly 800 languages, vast rainforests, towering mountains and amazing experiences, Trans Niugini Tours can show you the real Papua New Guinea in comfort and safety.

AMBUA LODGE , located at 7000 feet in the Tari Gap area borders on pristine mid montane rainforest at the beginning of the valley grasslands. This location promises the visitor eternal spring weather and magnificent views of the Tari Valley . The forest canopy, a dense mass of interlocking tree tops of all shades of green and the occasional bright splash of colour, provides a natural setting and an exhilarating climate for venturing along the nature trails - cross traditional vine bridges, discover a secluded waterfall, and spot high altitude orchids and rhododendrons.

KARAWARI Lodge , on a ridge overlooking the Karawari River , in the Sepik region, is a time-warped mixture of pre-technology and technology architecture - is the perfect base for some old-fashioned jungle, river and village exploration. You are in the middle of Arambak country-- locals pole dug-out canoes, the drums throb, the wild birds call, and, traditional village lifestyles continue largely unchanged.

MALOLO Plantation. Steaming volcanic mountains cloaked in green capes of lush tropical foliage thrust steeply upward from the deep blue waters. Jungle birds call randomly from their roosts, while thin threads of smoke rise from clusters of thatched roof huts lining the shores. This magical landscape is where Malolo Plantation Lodge is found.

Located in the Tonda Wildlife Management Area, BENSBACH Wildlife Lodge sits near the border with West Papua - in the remote and sparsely populated south-west corner of Papua New Guinea . Unlike much of the country, there are no towering mountains, but instead, broad and sweeping flood plains teaming with life - deer, wallabies, monitor lizards, crocodiles, cassowaries, sea eagles, pygmy geese and a whole host of other mammals and birds.

Rondon Ridge is situated at 7100 feet above sea level and sports magnificent views of the incredible Wahgi Valley . Rondon Ridge is the pinnacle of luxury in a rural setting. Only 30 minutes drive from the major centre of Mount Hagen . Rondon Ridge has twelve tastefully furnished rooms with modern bathrooms, warmed beds and quilts for those chilly highlands nights. Power is supplied by its own hydro system, providing uninterrupted clean electricity.

The "MV SEPIK SPIRIT", constructed in 1989, is built to the specifications to suit the demands of a shallow draft expeditionary vessel for navigating inland waterways. Its shallow draft allows passage into remote corners of the Sepik Region and areas not otherwise accessible to larger vessels. The "SEPIK SPIRIT" complies with the most rigid of safety standards including both the American Bureau of Shipping and Papua New Guinea safety regulations.

Refurbished in early-2006 to ensure that the SEPIK SPIRIT meets the expectations of the modern traveller. The refurbishment includes new interior and improved noise insulation.

The SEPIK SPIRIT accommodates 18 passengers in 9 twin bedrooms each with private bathroom. Onboard facilities include a dining room, lounge, bar, video and covered upper observatory deck. The entire vessel is air-conditioned. Because the SEPIK SPIRIT is custom designed for the rigors of operating in this unique environment, she is the ideal size for exploration. This, combined with small passenger numbers allows the traveller an intimate experience to little visited areas.
